The Housing Theory of Everything

In Man’s (Woman’s) search for contentment, good health, prosperity, or even self-discovery, access to safe and affordable housing remains critical. It serves as the foundation upon which ambitions are constructed, therefore, securing housing is crucial before we can start other endeavours.

I experienced the problem of a lack of a home when arriving in the UK for my postgraduate studies and for three weeks, stayed in a private hostel with other students, who were also seeking permanent accommodation. Although it was a comfortable place, it felt temporary, which meant I could not focus on school and finding a part-time job. I must confess my mental health at that time was sub-zero, literally non-existent.

There is now recognition of the significance of having a stable home by various governments as a priority. In addition to its personal advantage of comfortable housing, it is essential for the well-being and growth of stable communities. This leads to a country’s ‘positive’ development because stable neighbourhoods create a sense of belonging and it is known that communities with inadequate housing are prone to experience high crime rates, poor health, and reduced economic growth.

The first step towards improving the lives of populations for the better is to acknowledge housing as a human right. To ensure that every person has access to affordable, secure, and sustainable housing, governments are prioritising building programmes and allocating budgets to this. Additionally, the private sector is working together with these governments to invest in infrastructure, resulting in job creation and sustainable economic growth.
